Action & Influence
This is the critical juncture where action meets intention. Leveraging our expertise and influence, the Collective's staff and members are committed to actively engaging with local and regional policy-makers to enhance the quality of life for our Black communities. To achieve this, our approach involves integrating knowledge derived from Black communities to shape sustainable policies, regional decision-making processes, and ultimately influence positive environmental health outcomes.
Health and High Water
The Health and High Water research project, a collaboration between RAND and the University of Pittsburgh, works closely with community partners, the Homewood Children’s Village and the Black Environmental Collective, to address environmental injustices affecting residents in Pittsburgh’s historic Hill District and Homewood—predominantly Black neighborhoods. The study surveys residents with basements on their homes, neighborhoods, and overall physical and mental well-being, with a focus on experiences with flooding and basement dampness. Environmental data will be collected using air quality sensors and dust samples from basements to test for mold.
Resident leaders will then engage with service providers and policymakers to highlight the prevalence of basement dampness and its harmful effects on well-being, especially in Black communities. This work aims to close research gaps, enhance prevention and intervention efforts, and promote health equity.
