Who We Are

Since 2018, the Black Environmental Collective has drawn attention to the cumulative impacts of industrial pollution and environmental racism. As Black populations in Allegheny County become more transient, individuals and families are settling in areas where they face increasing vulnerability to environmental hazards and avoidable health risks. These factors, among others, have rendered regional Black populations less resilient and less responsive to the challenges posed by climate change. While none of these issues are new, our approach to addressing them is. With over 100 network members, the Black Environmental Collective is poised to assist environmentally impacted communities in asserting their narrative and forging pathways toward sustainable futures.

Amid a global pandemic, international conflicts, and national civil unrest, exemplified by those involving George Floyd and Tiffany Banks, these events offer opportunities to amplify the impactful work of the Black Environmental Collective. This strategic document aims to articulate the network's objective and delineate specific approaches to bridging the gap between climate change and persistent systemic challenges. Additionally, it endeavors to mobilize Black communities with the necessary tools to overcome environmental obstacles, advocate for sustainable community initiatives, and legislative actions that immediately enhance their quality of life. Guided by a Black Director, supported by local Black leaders, and in collaboration with Black regional affiliates, participation in the Black Environmental Collective signifies a commitment to reclaiming a healthy, progressive agenda for Black futures.
